Safely using a generator
[INSERT CO-OP NAME] works countless hours to keep the power on [INSERT PERCENTAGE]% of the time. However, there is that remaining percentage that is out of the cooperative’s control. Events like severe weather, car accidents and equipment failures that can knock out the power. Sometimes being without electricity is a real inconvenience and that’s why many homeowners have a generator to use until lineworkers can restore power. If you have a generator or are looking to purchase one, here are some tips to keep you and your household safe.
Only use a generator outdoors. Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices in an enclosed area. Those areas include inside a home, garage, basement or crawlspace. Keep the generator outside and away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come in your home.
Keep the generator dry. To avoid electrocution, keep the generator out of the rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
Let the generator cool. When it’s time to turn the generator off, make sure to let it cool down before refueling. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts could result in a fire.
